The Stranger

Soon to be released

The Stranger series will remain a work in progress for some time; there is no pre-set number of images.

“The Stranger 1” was initially titled “Padre,” and my initial idea was to do a small series of images that were variations on the same theme, but as so often happens, I soon began to experiment with other ideas and quickly realized that original “Padre” title would not suffice. It has now become a series of works that are closely related in style, but not tied to the original theme.

As I write this, I am within days of beginning my 75th year, and work on this series has led to some important personal revelations about how my style and first developed and has evolved over the years since my freshman year in college way back in 1965. I can now see the consistent themes and stylistic quirks that emerged in those early years and have carried through the intervening years untouched: circles, spirals, finials, few diagonal lines, narrow chins and hollowed faces, all built as though emerging from the elemental blackness at the edge of sanity. And I now realize that it took fifty years for me to develop the skill to do the work I wanted to do back then. I guess persistence pays.

These images were created using an Apple Pencil (1st Gen), iPad Pro, Procreate, Photoshop, and a few other tools. In a few cases, if during the often days-long process of taking one figure from concept to finish I had lost track of details and needed to increase resolution, I made use of the suite of wonderful tools offered by Topaz Labs.
